I can’t write, I can’t email, but I have a great way with the Press!

As we are all too aware, the media has the power to make or break a celebrity or sports personality.

Harry Redknapp has been a regular feature on our TV screens, radios and Twitter feeds over the past couple of weeks. But despite the severity of the charges against him, his likeability factor has hardly been dented and this is because he has spent years creating a positive profile in the media.

By and large, Harry has always been able to escape harrowing Press criticism, staying on the right side of the red tops and the broadsheets throughout his career, all of which now means that he is every journalist’s choice for the England manager role. As well as being a good manager, much of this comes down to personality and his ability to maintain a good relationship with influential journalists. AKA – good PR.

Never short of a word or two, and always willing to spend a few minutes chatting to the Press – even if it is whilst hanging out of the window of his 4×4 – has been key for Harry. By being accepting of the media, open to their requests for comment and even bringing in personal elements with frequent mentions of his wife Sandra, Harry has positioned himself as a media favourite. Harry is approachable, always able to offer a great soundbite to a journalist, and he is an expert in his chosen field – all of which has paid dividends and could now see him on the road to being the next England manager.

Whilst I wouldn’t normally encourage people to replicate the behaviour of footballers, Harry Redknapp’s relationship with the Press is one that I do advocate, and suggest everyone in a top position, regardless of industry, should be looking to mimic. If you are personable, knowledgable, insightful and reliable then journalists will keep coming back to you for comment on a regular basis. After all, if Harry “I can’t work a computer, I don’t know what an email is and I’ve never even sent a text message” Redknapp can do it – anyone can!
