In 1928 a rather clever chap called Edward Louis Bernays put his finger on the crux of what PR is, and why it is important:
“The conscious and intelligent manipulation of the organised habits and opinions of the masses is an important element in democratic society. Those who manipulate this unseen mechanism of society constitute an invisible government which is the true ruling power of our country.”
So is this why I got into PR? Well, perhaps. It definitely makes the profession sound very important, and it almost certainly is. PR has a profound effect upon the successful operation of businesses of any manner or size.
But more important for me is that PR is fun, unpredictable and challenging in equal measures, it keeps me on my toes and gets me out of bed every morning. PR is a wholly meritocratic profession; what you put in is almost always commensurate to what you get out, which suits me just fine… the drinks and lunches are just a bonus.
